Who are we

MARO cellar (MAša’s ROots) represents the revival of the MURSA family’s four-century-old winemaking tradition, which, according to written sources, dates back to the early 17th century, when the viticultural and winemaking activities of Valentin Murse are recorded in the “Gorniški register križniške komende Velika Nedelja” from 1613.

On the excellent vineyards of her ancestors, in the Ljutomer-Ormož hills near Jeruzalem, Maša Samec, the great-great-granddaughter of the landowner, winemaker, industrialist, and innovator Josip MURSA, continues the wine-making legacy with respect, passion, and responsibility.

The MURSA wine label features an abstracted, original depiction of a mosaic tile from the product line of Josip MURSA’s factory dating from 1895.

Josip MURSA’s inspiration was his mother, Marija MURSA, who was widowed at an early age - a highly entrepreneurial and determined woman. She successfully managed a 150-hectare estate and vineyards, and 150 years ago, she exhibited her wines at the World Wine Exhibition in Vienna in 1873.

In the MURSA family, strong, successful, and warm-hearted women helped shape the family’s history and served as an important, reliable, and steadfast pillar of the family. Some of the wines from the MARO winery are named in their memory.

MURSA wines represent a synergy of respect for the traditions of past generations, expertise, natural grape processing, and the preservation of harmony between aroma and flavor.

The MARO Winery offers a selection of premium aromatic wines, characterized by a luxurious array of fruity, floral, and herbal aromas. On the palate, the wines are lively thanks to their refreshing acidity, refined and full-bodied with rich extracts, harmonious, and pleasantly drinkable.
